We are going to Caye Caulker for 10 days starting Jan 31. One of our daughters is training for nationals and would like to rent a road bike or mountain bike for the 10 days to use on her trainer. (Phew – not my idea of vacation!!!) We would really like not to bring her bikes. Do you know of anyone who would rent a decent road or mountain bike? (Versus the cruiser style that are avail on caye caulker?) We could pick it up in Belize City or San Pedro

Forget a road bike - the roads are all soft sand. And if you take a mountain bike be prepared for a lot of ongoing maintenance, as the sand and salt gets into every bearing and bushing. In any case, CC isn't really big enough for any serious training. Apart from anything else, there aren't any hills. Your daughter would be much better off swimming or running while she's there - both excellent aerobic exercises that will help her.

I do a lot of cycling in my homeland (England) but just use a cruiser here. If I were to bring a good bike it would be either stolen or trashed, probably both, within weeks.

Indeed, Caye Caulker is way too small for a training, even if it were paved. Now renting a road bike and taking a day or two on the western highway would work, but I don't know of any suitable bike rentals for such an adventure. For CC, take P2's advice and swim/run/kayak as an alternative.

Are you talking about a piece of equipment that holds a bike still when you say trainer? If not, the others are right, it is too small and the paths and roads are too busy, mostly with kids, she'd hurt someone, and won't get enough training. But if you have something to mount the bike on, or plan trips inland, it's worth you looking. Biking is very popular on the mainland so you should be able to find something. Try Bruce's Cycling club on or (501) 223 7979 or Hop Sing on (501)227 2089. Both are in Belize City.

Good luck!
