We're heading to AC on Tuesday for 8 days!! We'll be staying at Mata Chica and were wondering how far from San Pedro we'll be? Long walk, bike, water taxi???
In general, I like the kind of vacation where I don't have to pack any socks, but Mata Chica looks a little upscale. Are shorts and sandals OK for dinner at Mambos and elsewhere around AC?
Also, what's the easiest/cheapest/most convenient way to call back to the US? We have an 18 month old who will be staying with Grandma, so my wife will want to check in every other day or so!
Thanks for the help!! Can't wait get our toes into some sand!!

Mata Chica is at the north end of North Ambergris Caye. To get back to San Pedro you'll need to either take the hotel's boat or a water taxi or ferry.

Casual clothes should be okay anytime even at Mata Chica. "Nice casual" also would be fine. Another good restaurant not too far from Mata Chica is Rendevouz (Thai-French fusion) and probably the best restaurant on the island is Capricorn, which is on North Ambergris but toward the south end.

Cheapest way to handle U.S. phone calls would be for "grandma" to call you.

Not sure where this is, but I heard from some teens staying on Ambergris, that there is a place where you can send email for only a dollar!!!!!! They kept in touch with their friends at home. I think it's at a hotel on front street in San Pedro somewhere. Is "grandma" on line??????

I was in shock the first time i got back to the states and saw the $$ for the phone calls from Belize to the US.

For sure, do it the other way, its massively cheaper to have them call you

Margarita posted that you can send email from the Cyber Cafe, across the street from the Mayan Princess hotel on Front Street. Hope this helps with the phone problem.

Debbie is right....but it ain't for a dollar! LOL The going rate for internet service on Ambergris Caye is $4.50 BZ for the 1st 15 minutes and $0.30 BZ a minute after that. Sometimes they will run specials where you can come in and out all day for $20 BZ. That is the best deal!....You can go in the morning and send all your mail and then go back at night and collect your responses. Currently as of this date, there is only one Internet Cafe on the island, The Cyber Coffee shop located at the Island Plaza on Front Street, across from the back entrance to Fido's Courtyard. There is another one opening around the first of July next to Manelli's Ice Cream Shop. This one should be really interesting as there are plans for a small bar inside....LOL
