First I would like to say thanks to everyone on this board for all the good advice and travel tips. We will be arriving in SP on Friday. It will be our 3rd visit to the island and our first since 2003.
I read a post in the "Trip Reports" section that mentioned a police road block and a tourist getting "back roomed" for having an open beer in the golf cart. Are these road blocks a common practice? The last time we were on the island (2003) I asked a police officer about having an open beer in a golf cart. I was told that it was O.K. as long as the person wasn't intoxicated and the beer had to be in a koozie so if the bottle broke the glass would stay in the koozie. I totally understand and agree with the need to stop the drunk driving on the island. Many people forget that the golf carts can be dangerous. I worked at a golf course for a few years and have seen first hand the damage a golf cart can do to both people and property. However, the post stated that the Police asked the man "How much money do you have". This sounds like the officer had his personal gain in mind, not the safety of the people of San Pedro. Thanks in advance for your input.

Know the laws of the country in which you choose to be a guest. There is an open container law in Belize, which Ambergris Caye is a part of. The police are a bit relaxed on this particular issue, contributing to the relaxed spirit of the island.
Personal gain is what many (not all) Police Officers are looking for here and other places. Hence, a need for IA.

I came upon a road block a few years ago and it was no big deal. Unless you are completely trashed you won't have a problem. As for open beer in the cart, be careful. About once a year you'll hear someone got locked up or harrassed for this. I don't drink out on the street, but many, many tourist do.

We're easily confused for one another. I was made in his image, though, I'm more of the bronzed type.
