This forum is very informative- I am so glad that I found it!
My partner and I are considering Belize as a destination for us. My partner is Dutch and is quite the pro when it comes to repairing, inspecting, etc motorcycles and scooters. He is the type who takes a weedwacker engine and puts it on a bicycle (therefore a little technically creative). This applies also to tractors, diesel engines, etc. Is there a need for these skills there? We have noticed that there weren't too many references to motorcycle/scooter rentals, is there a reason for that? Any info would be appreciated!

Out here on Ambergris Caye it's not big business. Now, if your partner can extend his expertise to boat engines he'll make a bomb. Come to think of it, that's what most mechanics here do - they work on an engine and shortly afterwards it blows up!

Thanks pedro2! Nothing like a good explosion smile
That is an interesting idea about the boat engines, thanks for mentioning it.

I've driven many thousands of miles on motorcycles and would never even consider driving one on mainland Belize, which may be why there dodn't seem to be any rentals available. Not to mention the fact that there aren't that many miles of paved roads to drive on.

There used to be a scooter rental place in Belize City by the tourism center. Not sure if it's still there. Very dangerous to drive one in Bz City IMO

If your partner wants to do courses while still in the States on Yamaha (2-stroke and 4-stroke), Suzuki 4-stroke and Honda 4-stroke (the last two are very similar) and get all the specialist tools and a stock of the most likely replacement parts and consumables, he'll be equipped to deal with most of the outboard engines to be found here. If he can add Caterpillar and maybe Yanmar diesel engines then he'll have extremely valuable skills that nobody else here will be able to match.

second that on the outboard engine mechanics. Very few here have the skills or knowledge on the computerized engines. They just swap parts. There is a need there for skilled techs.

you know- that actually sounds like a good idea- he really has a good technical background (education in Holland is hardly generalized like in Canada/US- he did technical the whole time) and should do some courses (the lazy bastard)!
I guess that he wont need to "be employed" he can do it 'freelance' on his own for people who need his help. Me, I am a translator and work via the computer no matter where i am smile
Your feedback is very helpful!!!
we wanna a tropical lifestyle (again! used to live in other hot countries and miss that stuff- no money no worries right?!)
We look forward to having a holiday there and then go from there.
have a nice (rum-filled!) weekend!
