Hi...Moving to Belize in the beginning of April and potentially cancelling health insurance in the US. Does anyone have an suggestions for companies that can provide quotes on Expat Insurance? Thanks.

We are doing the same thing, BS, and are looking into insurance from amedex.com. So far, they seem to be what we are looking for. Hope this helps.

consider carrying just a catastrophic insurance plan.much cheaper. You can get medical insurance here for $30US a month at a 80% pay plan, you pay 20% at Universal. They are quite good at diagnostics and most health issues but not advanced for most catastrophic situations.

Thanks very much...I'll give them a call. But just playing with it on-line, it looks like getting coverage in the US in case of emergency, costs $300 or $400 a month. Seems a bit pricey! The catastrophic insurance you guys are talking about pays for treatment in Belize?

Regular doctor visits and prescriptions are very affordable in Belize. Hubby had kidney stones while we were in AC last year, and total cost of medications, Dr. visits x 2, IV fluids, ect. were less than $300 US. Here at home, with ME being a nurse and doing everything except the ultrasound/Xrays, the cost for ONE visit to the ER was over $1200. So, it may cost more to carry insurance than to pay out of pocket for the occasional visit to the Dr. Something to think about.

We have been here a year and a half. I would suggest not canceling your US insurance as it may be impossible to get it back if you need it later. We went to a high deductable with Blue Cross and we get most things done in San Pedro very cheaply. Don't even report our bills back in the states.
I suggest that evacuation insurance is a must. From my personal experience with a head injury, the jet to the US was $29,750 US. The insurance that paid for it was less than $200 a year.

So...you have the evacuation insurance thru Blue Cross? I'm not worried about flu or broken bones (feel relatively confident about getting that fixed in Belize) but more concerned about a long term illness (cancer for example). I'm 33 and in good health now...but you never know. Looking for something that costs $1000-2000 a year that would cover something like that in the US. Possible?

My husband and I have international health insurance because we travel so much. They will cover you anywhere in the world! Also, you must live out of the country for six months or more (or at least have the "intent") to qualify for this health insurance. It costs us only $129 a month for both of us. The company is called IMG Global. They are located in Canada - Vancouver, I think. We have used them for 4 years now and have had no complaints with their service. We do everything over the internet. I think their site is imglobal.com. Good luck. p.s. nobody in the states could come close to their rates!

IMG looks like what I need. I'll contact them tomorrow for the specifics. Thanks for your help.
