San Pedro, Ambergris Caye will see water and sewer services extended to the north side of the island town. According to a release from Belize Water Services Limited, B.W.S. will begin the first stage of what promises to be a thirty million dollar expansion of the present system. Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding signed today, Consolidated Water, the Caymanian based company that runs the caye's desalination system, will provide one point five million dollars in bridge financing to B.W.S. to begin the initial works in the Boca del Rio area. The project will eventually extend to the rapidly developing part of the caye north of the river.

SAN PEDRO WATER EXPANSION PROJECT

(San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, May 8th. 2007) - Today, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Belize Water Services Limited (BWS) and Consolidated Water Belize Limited (CW Belize) for the expansion of water and sewerage services on Ambergris Caye. Under the terms of this MOU, Consolidated Water Belize Limited, in a joint cooperation arrangement with Belize Water Services Limited, will provide bridging finance of $1.5M to BWS to assist with water and sewer expansion works to the North of San Pedro town. CW Belize and BWS have been working together since 2000, when Consolidated Water expanded its water desalination operations to this resort island.
An overall expansion project for Ambergris Caye is being undertaken by BWS with assistance from CW Belize in response to rapid growth in the area. The project is expected to cost in excess of $30M and will take several years to complete. Additional support for the project will be provided for by the Government of Belize and developers.
BWS and CW Belize officials also met with some of the beneficiaries for the first phase of the project while on a tour of North San Pedro today. These beneficiaries are residents of the San Mateo and Boca Del Rio areas, the San Pedro High School, the Holy Cross Anglican School, hotels, condominiums and other businesses.

The Memorandum Of Understanding was signed by Messrs. Norris Hall, Chairman - BWS, Alvan Haynes, CEO - BWS and Wade Van Doren - General Manager of Consolidated Water Belize Limited. On hand were Messrs. Eugene Cleland, Director - Water & Wastewater sector of the PUC; Hilberto Martinez - BWS Director; residents and members of the San Pedro business community.
