Hello everyone. I have heard a lot of references to "the cut" and the hand ferry. Since I have never been to A.C. and our first visit is in November, is that a river that separates the north vs. south ends of island? If we rent golf cart can we get across or is it better to take water taxis?

We want to try some restaurants for dinner at north end, as well as explore island.

Yes it is water that separates the north and south Ambergris Caye. Yes golf carts can cross.
See //www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/facts.html
There is a photo of the ferry crossing and lots of excellent maps!!

Some golf cart rental people, do not want you going on the ferry with their golf cart.
Check this out before renting. If you want to go to those nice restaurants on the north end, you probably would not want to drive the cart after dark, the path is not great.
I think you would be best using water taxi for after dark travel. But go an enjoy.

Just secure a ride home if you will be out late.
