My husband and I have recently joined CHAPPS which is an insurance plan with Universal Medical and are we impressed. It cost us $30US a month and is a 20% copay.Heres some prices on services we have had done in the last few weeks. Mamagram $11 US, Chest Xray $5US, Full physical $8US, Colonoscopy $90US, Abdominal Ultra sound $10US and an upcoming MRI at $12US. Full body check with Dermotologist and several moles frozen off at $8US. We have found the facility clean and the doctors and staff very nice and professional, I would recommend this plan to anyone we had not been to the doctor in years and were able to just walk in and ask for services we wanted to have done, the wait was minimal.

Thanks

Sorry for my ignorance, but this is a topic that has come up recently for us as we will soon start building a home on AC.

As I understand it, health care is very reasonable in Belize anyway and most people go to Mexico for anything major, is that right? Is the health care you get on insurance as good as that which you would get if you paid cash for the service directly?

And on a slightly related note...

I've been told that most locals do not get health insurance and can't afford health care, at least on AC, and that there are some limited free services every now and then downtown. How does that work and do the locals really get the care they need? Is there a government program for emergency services? Or do other locals band together to help out when needed?

Yes health care is reasonable here, but still expensive if you live here as an artist with no other income as we do. As I said I was extremly impressed with Universal. I suppose if I needed heart surgery or a transplant I would go elsewhere. We are in our mid 50s and feel it wise to monitor our health. You can check out the website listed in previous post to see what services they have. I know about 15 other gringos who have joined all in the last year who are very satisfied. And no I dont really think Belizeans get the Health care they need, and no I dont think US citizens get the Health care they need. Could this be Government related???? I live on Caye Caulker and we get medical and Dental teams that come here every month or so with free services. We are also intittled to these free services but personally if I can afford medical insurance I dont want to take up a Doctors time that could be helping someone who cant.Absulutly the Medical care is as good with the insurance, the facility and Doctors get paid, they bill the insurance, just as your Doctor would bill your insurance. I just dont know how long this will last til the insurance co goes broke, although they just got millions from Musa,or visa virsa, dont ask I just dont know.

Then Google or search Universal Medical Center Belize. I just had a complete abdominal Ultra sound, same exact machine and procedure I had 2 yrs ago in Calif. There it cost me $1,200, here the full price without insurance is $50, I had to pay $10, and I still am impressed more every time I go in.

Maybe Universal could raise their prices a little and then they could forgo the 33 million that they would like the people of Belize to chip in to keep them going.
