I'm going to AC on Aug. 11 and would really like to bring some stuff to donate and to give to the kids. I don't have too much money to spend and won't have a ton of room/weight allowance in my luggage. But I was thinking about bringing some children's books, markers, crayons, pens/pencils, etc. Also, I read somewhere that the kids there love american t-shirts, frisbees, etc. and I thought it might be fun to give some of these items to the kids we see on the streets around town. Any thoughts???

I'm going to sound like Scrooge, but my thoughts are that giving things to kids encourages begging. By all means, bring things to donate, but give them to churches and schools, or other organizations. Certainly, if you make friends with a particular child, gifts are in order, but to just hand them out sends the wrong message in my mind. I'm sure others will disagree.

You've got a big heart and good intentions but have to agree there is something about it you will probably understand better after your here awhile. Were not poor by any means and it sends a signal that I'm having trouble explaining. Just come and have a good time. People here are happy and not real needy.

I guess that makes sense. I had thought it was sort of a norm from what I read. If it's not, I certainly don't want to lead to any bad habits. Well, I suppose I can just bring some extra stuff to the library.

Elbert, I had just read that the children liked some of these things from the U.S. and had thought about bringing them because of that reason. I just like to see children smile. Thanks for the advice..I'll just clean out my bookshelves and bring some books I don't need anymore. =)

Hey Kate,
There was someone going by the moniker "Belizegial" on another forum who was asking for donations of school supplies down in Placencia area. I don;t know if the kids on AC are in need of supplies, but you might could bring some and stop by the school. Maybe someone here could let you know what kind of composition books, paper, pencils etc. are used most. And I know this sounds inane, but if you bring non-mechanical pencils, make sure you bring pencil sharpeners!
