Having recently heard from a fellow South African, how unbelievably stunning Ambergris Caye and Belize are. I would like to know what the best time of the year would be to visit, as well as general info on accomodation rates for the backpacker type traveller(beach bungaloes)etc.

Ruby's Hotel would be what you are looking for! ON the beach. Room rates are $30 to $45 US a night.

I'm with Bill and Holley, the best time is tomorrow.

Seriously, I've been there in every season and always have a grand time. Theres not that much difference between the seasons. Especially compared to here in Oregon...

Tomorrow is definately good, and never soon enough, but if I were you I'd go between April and July, when it's winter in South Africa, but beautiful in Belize!

I agree.....everyday is a good day on Ambergris Caye!
My preferred time of year though would be April or May. Waters pretty warm, bugs aren't bad, rainy season hasn't started yet (not that we have had much of one this year!). April is still in peak season so prices will be a little higher. May would be good!
Ruby's is good, just called for rates:
Dbl. with fan...$45BZ
Dbl. with A/C...$90BZ
These are off season rates...was told they would go up about $10bz for peak season.

Lily's is good:
About $43US for Dbl. bed, A/C, with fridge, hot & cold water.

Conch Shell Inn is also for the budget minded and on the beachfront. Can't reach them by phone...no one answering...guess they are out swinging in the hammock...LOL
I think Marty has a link for them on his lodging section. (this site)

There are some other budget places on Front St. and Middle St....not beachfront...if you really want to save money. These won't offer as many comforts, but they are usually clean and have private bath with hot water.
IE: Coral Beach Hotel (some with A/C) Front St. and Martha's on Middle St.

Visit soon!

Thank you all for the words of advise and info, unfortunately I don't think South African Airways flies directly to Belize, otherwise would definitely be on a flight today!
Will have to pine away in the meantime and keep myself informed by following all the messages and pearls of wisdom.
Cannot wait...desperately far away
