Belize's 6 districts are further divided into 31 constituencies. Each constituency sends one representative to Belize's House of Representatives to 5-year terms.

This election is known as the General Election. Each person (who is eligible to vote) votes for the candidate they would want to represent their constituency in Central Government.

Each political party nominates a candidate, or Standard Bearer, for each constituency. The winner becomes the Area Representative of the constituency, while the loser remains the Standard Bearer of that constituency for his/her political party.

Curious on this as well. Would this be Ambergris Caye only or all the cayes in the Belize Rural South Constituency?

This would be interesting. Districts in Belize, per se, have no autonomy. No Governor, no District Government. After Central Government, we have City/Town/Village Councils. So in that aspect nothing would change.

What may change would be how many Representatives to the House of Representatives this area would send, as each constituency sends a representative. Each district is divided into constituencies based on voting population. The least amount are in Stann Creek and Toledo: 2. So one would think that the new district would have at least 2 representatives (as opposed to the one which we are currently sending).

BUT, during the last re-districting (which was more like a re-constituencing, if that is a word, since the constituency boundaries and not the district boundaries were redrawn in some cases) in 2005, they saw the need to expand Cayo from 4 to 6 constituencies, since the object is to have as equal a number of voting persons in each constituency. Never was the splitting of the Belize Rural South Constituency brought up (as far as I can recall). So, maybe this area would not have a high enough voting population to have 2 constituencies. Belize Rural South (as per 2007 estimates) has a voting population of 4,977 and that ranks us 14 out of 31 nationwide. The least populated is Albert at 3,059. So half of 4,977 is way too little to keep voting populations as even as possible throughout all constituencies (as per the Belizean Constitution).

As to the money generated by the different districts, no matter if Ambergris Caye becomes Belize's 7th District, funds would still be forwarded to Belmopan. As is, San Pedro doesn't send funds to the Belize District Capital of Belize City. Was the same when Orange Walk brought in the most money nationwide, most went to Belmopan/Central Government.

So the most effect this could have, is that the Cayes send 2 representative to Central Government, which could bring much more funds to us. But realistically (like I showed) this area may only have enough voters for one constituency anyway. So, it all could just be for formality reasons.

Yes, thanks for the info Joey-Joe.

Guess the question worth begging is - will more representation equal a greater share of the wealth (or rather keeping more of ot where it was generated). Likely not. Maybe best case an additional voice speaking on behalf of AC in central govt.

For whoever can clarify....
How does Belmopan decide how much of what tax revenues generated in the districts get reallocated back to the same districts?
