Never been to ambergris caye, we are headed there in June for a week, I wanted to see if there were any boat rental places nearby? I would have my own GPS and will download the maps to it before I go.

You will be able to rent a boat, but it will be by way of a charter and you will have to have a local captain. Quite apart from local laws (which don't appear totally clear) no boat owner will let you take his pride and joy out by yourself, as there are way too many coral heads and obstacles.

I've read elsewhere that boat rental is not common, attributed to an extremely difficult to navigate coral reef and shore environment (even for locals). The implication being that non-local captains would most likely damage the boat (and the coral) by running aground too frequently.

Too frequently? - just once will usually do it. Engines don't come cheap.
