Hi all,
Countdown is 7 weeks from today!!! I'm really ready to quit my job and leave tomorrow, but no such luck [Linked Image] At any rate, you've all been so helpful in helping us plan our trip, and I want to know from the "regulars" your favorite eating spots--other than Capricorn and Mambo (we're staying at Mata Chica!) I know it's all pretty casual from what I've read so far and we'll do nice ($$) a couple of nights, but I would like the inside scoop on where you locals and pros (those of you who live in AC or those who travel there often) like to go--favorite spots, yummy Belizean or whatever. My boyfriend Wayne insists he's going to catch my fish dinner at least once--which will be fabulous, but I want some backup options as well. [Linked Image] Thanks as always, and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Eva....here's a previous post I made
Hope it helps! Enjoy!

I fell in love with Estell's when I first visited Ambergris Caye in 1995. The food was good....the grouper sandwich was excellent. I think breakfast is also my favorite time there. It is great to sit outside with your feet in the sand and watch the water while having your morning coffee. I think the sea breeze aids in digestion too....LOL. I don't dine there often now....not because the food isn't good...it's just that with inflation...the prices have gone up a bit since my first visit there. If I were on vacation I probably wouldn't mind it...but living here I try to watch my budget....lol.

Here are a few of the local places that have good food at great prices.(Most of these Jesse mentioned earlier...we must eat at the same places Jesse...LOL)

JAMBEL JERKS is my favorite. Nice atmosphere, great fish basket and coconut curry chicken. He makes a mean pina colada too!

CANNIBALS is my lunch hangout every day. They have great baked potatoes with various toppings and good salads. The pan fried fish dinner is really great. Good prices too. They dont do dinner though. This is another good breakfast spot....on the beach too. Great waffles!

REEF RESTAURANT on middle street. Cheap...good local food. I get lobster burritos for $5 bz. You can get a whole fish fried with rice and beans for about $7 bz. Sand floor...nice staff...clean bathrooms.

CELI'S DELI on Front St. Good sandwiches! Great tamales! No burgers though.
SMOKEHOUSE at THE BOATYARD...ask anyone in town...they can direct you. The food is a little bit higher but not unreasonable. They make a great burger....and the smoked chicken is very good. Nice potato salad too! You get the added plus of sitting lagoon side here...and there is always a nice breeze. I've had very relaxing lunches here.

TACO STAND...at least that's what I call it...LOL It is next door to the Rock's grocery on Middle St. Just a little hole in the wall....painted blue...very tiny. They have good tacos and burritos there. The tacos are 3 for $1bz....you can rack up on these....

RUBY'S DELI...Front St.....good place to get breakfast...wonderful cinnamon buns....place is always busy in the AM.

CORAL BEACH DIVE SHOP....LOL....yes a dive shop....for breakfast. A little known fact amongst tourist is that they have the best Johnny Cakes I've ever eaten. For a $1.50 bz each...you get a bisquit-like bun filled with this shredded chicken mixed with a sauce. To this day I've been begging for the recipe. Put a little hot sauce on those and boy...you've got a meal. That is the poor man's Belizean breakfast....LOL

The list above is great, I also like Fido's
especially the Lobster dinners. Elvi's was very good on Middle Street. Moncho's carry out lunches (lobster) by the Palace Casino.
Mickey's close to the airport for Breakfast and lunch. Island Cuisine for Conch Fritters. Find the Alebran (sp) bakery with a blue front on Middle street for Coconut tarts.
Great food everywhere, just the price varies.

Sandshaker's got a great list. I'll second that Canibal's for breakfast. The omelets are the best in SP. Estelles has gotten pricey, but still is darn good. Used to have the best Bloody Mary in town..has slipped a little. (For those who might consider such a morning diversion).
It is obvious that Sandshaker is only allowed south of the airport when the Barefoot Iguana is throbbing. She left out the Jade Garden (one of our favorites) and the Patio (a little $$$, but has some of the best lobster around). We also like the Reef on Middle St, and Ambergris Delight, also on Middle, is pretty good. Are you hungry yet? Also be sure to try the lobster or conch bisque at Fido's.

We just returned Wednesday from AC..our first trip.We loved stopping at Celi's Deli for meat pies and burritos(the Mayan burritos are great!) We had excellent food at a small place on Pescador Drive, north near the hand ferry, called Papi's Diner. It has only been open a few months, very small place but the food is excellent!(See the article on Papi in the August 31st issue of the San Pedro Sun,which is online). We ate at Elvi's..service was great, food(except for the T-Bone) was excellent, but it was more expensive. Also loved Estel's by the Sea. Great breakfast! We stayed at the Seven Seas,on the beach north of town and every day at about 5 in the afternoon,we would have children come around with various food items in buckets, wrapped in napkins, still warm from the kitchen.Had the best tamales I've ever eaten, meat pies, lemon pie, johnny cakes, etc. Some nights we would wait and dinner would come to us! We never had a bad meal! Enjoy.

Actually I listed all the places I go considering my Belizean payscale now...LOL

Absolutely, please visit Papi's Diner. His business has been booming since he opened. Great food, good prices and wonderful company...not to mention he makes great drinks! [Linked Image]

Actually, Rendezvous closed last week...just for the off season. We missed it by one day..damn the luck! I would have loved to go in and taken a peek around, have a drink and some dinner...but a little too late. We won't miss it next year.

I dream of the fajitas at La Margarita, the frozen limeades at Victoria house, the specials and chix sandwiches at El Patio, several delights at Jade Garden, the OJ from the folks across the street from the north side grocery, Fidos fried chicken and Rosie's smile, and don't forget ANTOJITOS SANTELMO - A great little place just south of La Margarita, on the main drag, west side of the road across from the Saeed Bamboo shop. Green, screened, and very cool all day long. Great burritos, other local specialties, super reasonably priced.
