Former Belize prime minister steps down as party leader
Thursday, February 14, 2008
BELIZE CITY, Belize: Former Belize Prime Minister Said Musa on Wednesday officially informed his People's United Party (PUP) that he is stepping down as leader.

Musa's announcement came during a meeting of the PUP's National Executive and constituency committees on Wednesday afternoon at the party's Belize City headquarters.

According to a statement from the PUP Secretariat, the Independence Hall meeting was called to hear from the leadership and general membership and to begin the process of revision and rejuvenation within the party.

Party Chairman, and former Attorney General, Francis Fonseca welcomed the delegates to the meeting, reminding them that the PUP has suffered defeats before and has always rebounded and returned stronger.

He said that each member has a role to play in rebuilding the foundation of the party and regaining the trust of the electorate.

When he rose to make his presentation, party leader, and now Leader of the Opposition, Said Musa, told delegates that "today is the beginning of a new chapter in the PUP." Musa reminded his colleagues that the defeat suffered on February 7, 2008 is by no means insurmountable.

Musa ended his presentation by saying that it is time for the PUP to "renew itself from the top." He said his stepping down will make way for a new leader, one which Musa says "must be filled with the spirit and soul of the PUP to continue the peaceful, constructive Belizean revolution."

Musa noted that over 40 percent or over 47,000 voters went out to cast a ballot vote in favour of the PUP on February 7, 2008, signaling their continued belief in the PUP and its philosophy of social justice and equal opportunity for all.

Musa said the party must now firm up this core support and attract new members to the great movement.

The PUP Executive has set Sunday, March 30, 2008 as the date for the convention to elect the new leader of the People's United Party.

Also on Thursday, the PUP announced that its National Campaign Manager, and former Minister of Home Affairs, Ralph Fonseca has also resigned.

It would be nice if the Rt. Hon. Said Musa could take a much needed break, but the people re elected him to represent them in Belmopan for another five years.

What's the point of embezzling millions, if you can't take some time off to enjoy it?

It's rarely rocket science, it's usually just math: then again if you can't do the math.......
