George was a nice guy. I met him a few times in the 70's & 80's, as he was a regular customer at a bookshop owned by friends. He liked to be treated as "one of the guys" with absolutely no deference to his fame. The worst thing that ever happened to him was when he was shot in his own house trying to deal with an intruder, who may well have been intent on murdering George. After what had happened to John this really shook him and he never recovered psychologically. He rarely ever left his estate after that and never again wandered around Henley, his local town where the bookshop was.
