Hi Folks,
Me and my buddy just got back after spending 8 days/nights in AC. I did all the research on the trip and believe me I got a lot of good information from this bulletin board and I thank each and everyone of you for contributing. There are a lot of great things to say about AC. The local people are incredibly friendly. We stayed at Ruby's. Ate at Elvi's (the day before they closed for vacation), Fido's, Estells, Cannibals, Ruby's, Big Daddy's, hamburger joint on Middle St, Celi's and Jambi Jerk. Also ate barbecue chicken on Saturday from the Lion's Club. Drank way, way too much beer. Checked e-mail at CyberCoffee (Eleanor, the owner, is a really nice person). Did the snorkel trip to Hol Chan, Coral Garden, lunch at Caye Cauler, and finally swam with the nurse sharks and sting rays at Shark Ray Alley. Did this tour with Searious Tours (behind Ruby's). Rooms at Ruby's were comfortable and economical. Enjoyed the cinnamon buns and coconut tarts from Ruby's deli. Enjoyed listening to Barefoot Skinny at Fido's (if Barefoot Skinny is reading in...I was the one waving hands and clapping after you singing Arlo Guthrie's...coming into Los Angeles, bringing in a couple of keys... hope you can tell I'm a product of the '60s!
We started our trip flying into Cancun from New Orleans. Immediately went to Playa del Carmen, spent two night. Took ADO bus south to Chetumal. Grabbed a Batty bus, got across the border to Corozal. Flew single engine Tropic Air from Corozal to AC. What an experience!! Single engine, 6 seater, flying at 1000 ft at 100 kts. Nobody onboard moving a muscle. Upon leaving AC, flying Tropic Air, single engine, 12 seater to BZE. Another cool experience. This time I got to fly co-pilot (made absolutely sure not to touch anything!)
Recommend taking a walk down the beach as far south as you can walk and then north, at least to the cut. Also recomend checking out some of the local hangouts. I went into Marino's bar on Middle St a few times to shoot pool and drink a few beers with the locals and it was really an experience. I could tell that they genuinely welcomed tourists.
Definitely plan on making it back to AC!
