Hello!
We are looking for best place to stay when we come in Dec. 08. We have only been to Belize on a cruise ship stopover. We went inland to see the zoo and ruins. We really want to stay on Ambergris Caye and do some serious snorkeling! We have been to Riviera Maya a few times and usually rent a condo due to the fact that we have 6 people (3+ bedrooms) and like to have a bit of elbow room and our own kitchen. Here's a bit more info:
We are family with 3 kids (plus a spare always seems to show up)! Kids are teens plus a 7 year old - no little ones.
We like to cook our own meals for most breakfasts and lunches, must have fridge, micro, oven , etc. Prefer beachfront rooms with A/C, like to walk everywhere (close to restaurants, bars, grocery stores is preferred). LOVE snorkeling. Like freshwater pool, but not required. Have looked at Sunset Villas, Pelican Reef, Paradise Villas.....
Are there others? Any recommendations? Also, is it fairly easy to find stores with basic provisions (like bread, fruit, cereal, cheese, coffee, etc.)? Thanks for your two cents!

Unless you enjoy grocery shopping, I'd use Simon at Lagniappe Provisioning. http://www.lagniappe-belize.com/

The Palms

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

I would say either Paradise Villas or the Palms. Any further out of town than these places and you will have to rent a 6 seater golf cart to get around.

Paradise Villas is a good place for families and you can snorkel off the dock at Wet Willy's right in front. There a lots of fish as they are feed scraps all the time. The local kids like to play in the water at the next dock over. I have seen some of the most incredible stuff snorkeling in this area.
Capt. Ron also has a two unit condo at Paradise Villas that he rents out separately. This is an up and down beach front unit and could probably handle your group of six as they have sleeper sofas.
Good luck

Have you looked into Exotic Caye Beach Resort(formerly Playador)?
Unit #2-C has two bedrooms 1 1/2 bath and a loft.
Monkey Bites is on property, Crazy Canuck's, there is a pool and large beach. Located 1/2 mile from Town and easily walkable. We have unit #2-B but this is a one bedroom with a queen size futon in the living area. For those of you that have stayed in#2-B, we have rebuilt the shower. It is larger and made of tiles and glass blocks.

The Palms is the best place especially if you have teenagers.

I personally love The Palms. Can't beat the location and value. Don't tell them that they are good value though. I don't want anyone getting any ideas.

We have no basis for comaparison having just returned from our first trip. But we did enjoy Paradise Villas and it has everything you seem to be looking for. Snorkeling and swimming off the docks was cool as ScubaLady says.
