"Tragically I think you're right, we will see something go wrong, sooner than later."

This is in reference to feeding them rather than running into one on the street.

What makes this message board such a wonderful place is that is a slice of local life in addition to a tourist information site. This topic is a good example of how the two different perspectives come together and can cause confusion if you don't understand the dynamics.

Not an indictment -- I think it's wonderful!

I am so happy for Sri -- what a horrible day that must have been for you Jen

I will have a Belikin -- put it on klcman's tab.

I pass the infamous crodile lake each evening on my way home and I see crocodiles every time. However I very rarely see them in the morning on my way to town. They have been encouraged and enticed by the teenage boys who feed them chicken on a rope -while tourists watch and pay the boys for their trouble. I have seen up to 7 crocs at one time in this area.

When I lived in San Pablo we had a croc that lived and hung out right by the house - only a chain link fence between him and us.

They are indeed prevalent - but they typically stay in the lagoons and canals where the water is murky.

With their habitat being encroached upon and destroyed the existing crocs are now easily spotted. When I was a kid it was a very rare occurance to spot a croc.

As always common sense should prevail when in the vicinity of potential dangerous wildlife.

On another note, the sea is teeming with sharks, sting rays, jelly fish etc - but it doesn't mean that you are in imminent danger each time you choose to take a dip.

If you go and visit the jungle you would probably be very lucky indeed to spot a venomous snake or majestic jaguar -but they are there and one needs to be wary.

For the most part unless you go looking for the crocs (as a tourist) that is the only way you are likely to spot one.

How big are the crocs in SP?

It's rarely rocket science, it's usually just math: then again if you can't do the math.......

Best guess on the biggest one would be around 12' that would put it around 300 to 400lbs (based on weighing a 10'3" at 215lbs.)

Are there any consequences for those who do feed the crocs? When we were there in Dec, the boys/young men would be at the lagoon around a certain time every day for the "show". If the authorities are aware of people feeding them, do they do anything about it? You would think it would be a priority for the safety of everybody on the island.

Its worse for animals than for humans; People can get hurt or killed ar worst, but the animals will keep associating humans with food, and not get wild again.

The only option is eliminate them. Relocating has been proven to be ineffective, as the crocs keep returning no matter how far away you bring them.

Those that are guilty are the people paying for the "show". They should be the ones to be punished IMO.

Just a matter of time and the clock is ticking until we see a post child killed by Crocodile
