After a three month spell of being land locked I was back diving yesterday. Is it my imagination or had the reef become more colorful? I shot 45 minutes of video and am knocked out by the vibrancy and extent of the soft corals, sea fans, sponges, etc.
I have always preferred the diving 'up north' and the second dive yesterday at Angels Flat was awesome. The water was warm and clear and the sun penetrated down below the 40' level.

ScubaLdy, you are making me want to take up diving again. I was just a club diver and have never been certified. I have followed your 'threads" and read all the great info from everyone. That will give me a great excuse to come back. Thanks!

We crossed the reef at the Maya Cut - just before Mexico Rocks.
Our first dive was at a site named "Charlie" and the second one was called "Angels Flat." The second dive was much better than the first. I can hardly wait until May when I get my video editing program back!
I took the day off today to pay my property tax but will be back in the water tomorrow. Yipee!

The reason so many people go south to dive is that some one told them about a great site "XYZ" and they insist on wanting to dive that.

What I find works best is to find the dive operator who does the kind of diving you are interested in and ask them "where is a good place to find that TODAY. Environment changes day to day.

I don't want to travel too fast and want to stop and take pictures. If the boat goes to a site that does not have a mooring to tie up to the DM tends to move at a fairly fast pace in order to make the loop they are used to.

Also, some of the guys/gals who are not the owners like to connect up with their buddies running other boats. Think about, captains have to sit there and wait for the 45 minutes you are down there having fun. It's a lot more fun to be able to joke around with friends.

Many operators are picking up divers down south so going north uses up a lot more gas.

If you are staying up north take advantage of it and go with operators who are working those waters ---- or my best buddy --- Belize Diving Adventures! Sorry gang - I can't promote the northern shops OVER my guys. I find the most color up north - sponges, hard and soft coral, sea fans, etc.

The above are some of the reasons I get stuck going with a group to the same old tried and true destinations south of town. Bottom line is - talk - talk - talk. And when you get up from a fabulous dive rave about it and be sure and give them a nice tip that day. Believe me; they will work hard at making you happy.

Well said SCUBAlady! I have a policy of not mentioning the name of the site and let the Divemaster decide. Hes going to look at the tide, currents ,visibility, experience level of the divers on the boat and also consider what they have seen before. So I don't complicate his life with telling him where to dive. Your right on about North , its a gas mileage issue with shops in town, It cost more to go farther North so consequently the less visited , more pristine sites are North.

are most dive shops accomodating if we request a certain area other than the same as always?

Yes, so long as the trip will be economic. I was asked today to take just two divers to a site 12 miles away. Regrettably I had to decline.
