Effective Monday there will be an increase in the price of chicken. The
Belize Poultry Association says the wholesale price of whole, dressed
chicken will increase from two dollars six cents per pound to two dollars
eighteen cents per pound. President of the Belize Poultry Association Ben
Bergen said they are unable to control prices on the world market and as a
result the increase has become necessary.
Ben Bergen, President Belize Poultry Association
"Well there is a big need for it because of the increases of inputs like
the feed, the soybean meal that has gone up already some months ago but we
kept back about putting up the price but there comes a time when you just
have to do it. Also the fuel price is going up, all the other expenses are
going up so there is actually no way we could stay with this price and
still survive. We just have to add on so the farmers can survive, be in
business longer. We're trying our best, trying not to go up too much
because we know there is a lot of people buying chicken so we're trying to
keep off increasing too much but we just have to add on whatever, the time
is coming and we just have to do it."
The Association says it thanks the public for heir understanding and
continued support of the industry and pledge to continue providing
consumers with the highest quality meat at the most affordable price.
