I've had another attack today. Almost 200 messages all claiming to be automatic responses returning messages I sent that turned out to be undeliverable. I've examined some of them and they're all spurious - the whole lot was written by somebody. Just to be sure I did a complete system malware scan - nothing. And I trust my anti-malware software as one of the two the most effective I've ever come across. Last time this happened I did a complete scan with my resident software, then unloaded it and did another with AVG - nothing was found by either. Yet I had received several hundred messages in a few hours.

Why do people do this? What can they gain?

They send spam in your name because you are a real sender, even if you weren't the one that sent these messages. It would help if your mail provider set up an spf record, then many recipients would just ignore the messages automatically.

You probably don't have a virus, if your e-mail adress has ever been posted anywhere on the internet it's open for abuse by spoofers. You can try an online scan using Kaspersky, I just did and found 2 viruses that where not found by my existing AV software. I ended up trashing my existing AV software and installing Kaspersky to get rid of the viruses (total of 36 hours of work.)

After two days and around 400 similar messages saying emails I'd sent were undeliverable it's all stopped. Just what happened last time.

If I ever lose confidence in Bullguard then I'll try Kaspersky. Interesting that it's from Russia, as that's where most of the spam comes from as well.

Worth doing the online scan anyway, doesn't cost anything. Kaspersky just stopped 2 more viruses this morning coming in on downloaded music files.

I could not activate the "Accept" button in Firefox; it worked in IE.

They say on their website that it only works in IE6 and above, not any other browser.

I'll try it when I have the time to uninstall my Bullguard and reinstall it later. Maybe this weekend.

That's only to set it up. Thereafter you can use any browser, or so is my belief having not actually done it.
