I sometimes get asked why Belize bans swimming with manatees, whereas in Florida it's a common activity. This video and thread perhaps shows why.

I have swam with the manatees off Caye Caulker about 5 times. So do alot of lucky tourist. Their are 5 of them that come here to a certain area for about 4 months out of the year. They are shy so if you are with a large group you are not apt to see them. Last year I had a big guy swim right up to me I could almost touch him, He was huge, he then just turned and swam off. I dont think they see very well. Hope they stay safe, which is why Im not telling what months or where...

Wade - yes, that's the link. There's a video to watch. I'd like to post a link to just that video but I don't know how, so I've instead referred to the thread that includes it. Same difference.

This was both hauntingly beautiful and disturbing at the same time. I couldn't believe someone would be so ignorant as to try and "surf" a manatee! I think we sometimes forget what a privilege it is to be able to enjoy these beautiful creatures (or any other for that matter) in their natural habitat. Am I the only one who finds it more rewarding when you've waited so long and finally that moment of trust comes and you get to be face to face? I would much prefer it this way than cornering and harrassing.

Yes I agree, say...whats the difference here between the Nurse Shark and Sting Ray encounters/
In Belize guides grab sharks and swim them over to the tourist so they can be pet. They treat rays the same. Whats the difference?

I see guides giving proper respect to turtles and manatee but not nurse sharks and sting rays.....? whats up with that?

It just looks like a little bit of innocent sea-cow tipping to me.
