We are looking into where to stay for our first trip down. Many of the hotels are a few miles outside of town. Should we find something in town? Or are taxis not a problem?

Any good recommendations?

everyone will tell you it depends on what you want - taxis are no problem and it's also easy to rent a golf cart and get to just about anywhere.

Banana Beach is just a bit south of town - an easy 20 minute walk along the beach into town or a quick ride. They have one of the better beaches, 2 great pools, the friendliest most helpful staff, and breakfast is included in the room price. Rooms run from basic to full suites with kitchen. The restaurant on site, El Divino, is very good and drinks at the bar are great - I still say they make the best rum punch on the island!

I'm sure others will weigh in w/ their faves!

I can never remember which is better . . . safe? . . . or sorry?

clarification: a few miles south can be done by taxi or golfcart. a few miles north may require use of a water taxi (the cart path is only passable north of the bridge to a point, and after depending on road condition, can be impassable). if you go into town a lot, it might be a small hassle. if you are looking to veg on a gorgeous beach/pool, north is great.

it DOES depend on what you want. up north, beaches are very pretty, and the resorts are quiet. more of that 'blue lagoon' feel. in town is louder, closer to the bars, music and action. south is a cross between the two.

start with figuring out what you want (party, tranquility, etc) and how much you want to spend per nite, then use the 'lodging' function to narrow down to what you're looking for.

good luck!

Can anyone tell me about the water taxis? Are they hard to get? If we do stay at the north end, can we still get to town easily, even if a bit of a hassle?

in addition, some north resorts offer one or two boats daily you can hitch on for free: when they take their employees to and from town, you can sometimes catch those. varies. you can always email the resorts you are considering staying at and ask if that option is available.
