Anyone attend the meeting? I'm interested in hearing what they are proposing.

I thought there might be something in the San Pedro Daily but it seems it hasn't been updated since Wednesday. frown

Yes. They have (IMO grandiose) ideas about building a multimillion $ terminal rather like the ferry terminal for Cozumel at Playa. They referred several times to it being like an airport terminal. Location yet to be decided, but clearly the mayor wants it to be where the old freight dock is next to the park. All water taxis and boats carrying incoming passengers would be required to dock there, and all public officers (customs, immigration, police etc) would be based there.

The mayor said the project would actually cost Bz$1.6m, but we all know how projects over-run, especially public ones. It would be funded by levies on the water taxi companies. I didn't see any representatives from those companies at the meeting.

The given justification was to increase security over undesirables coming to the island, and hence to reduce what she acknowledged was now an epidemic of serious crime.

As an aside the deputy mayor mentioned their intention (not desire) to close and remove all other docks in the "core" town area.

When I spoke to him privately after the meeting he clarified the "core" area as covering from Boca del Rio to Ramon's. He said he didn't mean that it would be compulsory, but that all users of docks would be invited to operate from the back of the island instead. When I pointed out that many of those operators would not be able run their businesses from there he again said it wouldn't be compulsory. I said that there would be zero take-up of a voluntary scheme, because it would be tantamount to closing down your business.

He said that boats could be moored in front just like at Playa, where there are no docks and guests have to wade out to them. I believe by "voluntary" he was referring to relocation of the businesses, not the closure of the docks.

Some of the speeches were in Spanish (which I don't understand - I thought the only official language of Belize was English?) and some were spoken so quietly that I couldn't hear them. But I believe the above was the gist. Harriette was also there and may be able to contribute further insight. I didn't see any other boarders there.

They had a 3-D computer simulation that was on a continuous and dizzying loop. Looks like some sort of enclosed glass-roofed mall building at the beginning of the pier (over the water) and then a 350 ft pier after that with lots of boat slips.

Something like this on the lagoon side could to a catalyst for development there. It would still be walking distance to the reef side. Or....has it now become a cool thing again for more development on the reef side?

That sounds pretty insane. Will they force private homes to take down their piers? And then charge high prices to dock at the town pier? Why don't they just start enforcing existing regulations? I would much rater see the money spent on education and health services. Oh and thanks Marty for the spell check

i understand the interest of keeping the undesirables out, but what stops them from just boating in from anywhere else, like up north, down south, or the backside? i don't get the logic vs the upset it may cause to residents/businesses. anyone?

and, would your clients in that core area then have to go to that dock for pick-up, drop off?
