While the UK struggles to deal with demands that Sharia Law be adopted in deference to the Muslim population (you know, just the way that alcohol and mini skirts are never a problem for westerners in the middle east) the latest news from Riyadh Province is more than a little disturbing.

The religious police, known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, or the Muttawa, is charged with enforcing Saudi Arabia's strict Islamic code. Its members usually ensure that unmarried men and women do not socialize, women are properly covered and men attend prayers.

The startling result is that pet shops have now been banned from selling cats and dogs to men, although women are are still allowed to own cats, so the result is that while men are prohibited from walking their dogs in public, strangely enough, there are no rules against women publicly displaying their...

There was no statement of inequality, just a comment on Saudi societal values: there is a big difference ?

I emailed this subject to my buddy in Afghanistan, questioning him about the dog and cat situation. This was his response:

"Cats and dogs are prevalent but not taken care of in the way we know pet owners to do. They neither are not live stock nor are they pets. They are just there. However some dogs are working dogs that keep the sheep and goats in line. Next to women, dogs and cats have a terrible life here as far as I can tell. However, sheep and goats fair better than women."

He is not joking!
