Vanishing of Aviator Puzzles Many
[Linked Image]
By STEVE FRIESS
Published: September 6, 2007

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 5 - As the search for the wealthy adventurer Steve Fossett entered its third day, rescue crews and aviation experts expressed bafflement Wednesday at his disappearance and the inability to find him.

They pointed out that Mr. Fossett was a highly skilled pilot who was flying on a clear day over familiar terrain when his single-engine aircraft vanished Monday morning in rural western Nevada on what was to have been a brief flight.

More than a dozen aircraft have been used to scour a mountainous area south of Reno since the search began in earnest at 6 p.m. Monday, but so far there has been no sign of Mr. Fossett or the blue and white Citabria Super Decathlon he was flying.

What is more, officials say, they have not detected the emergency locator beacon that should have automatically gone off in the event of a crash, or that could have been enabled by Mr. Fossett himself if he was capable.

"This is kind of strange, because these aircraft have transponders and emergency locators and you can usually readily find them anywhere in the world, including under the sea," said Ross Aimer, chief executive of Aviation Experts, a consulting firm in San Clemente, Calif., who has flown the region several times. "This guy is totally lost in what I would say is not a no man's land. So far, nobody's heard the electronic location beacon. That sounds to me very, very strange."

Will Hasley, co-author of the 2006 memoir "Chasing the Wind: The Autobiography of Steve Fossett," called the disappearance and the inability to locate Mr. Fossett a "mind-blowing thing."

"I can't figure this out," because although the area is largely mountainous, "I think he was looking at the desert part of it" on his flight, said Mr. Hasley, who last saw Mr. Fossett in July when he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio.

For a moment Wednesday afternoon, searchers thought they had found Mr. Fossett.

"We thought we had it nailed," but the wreckage that was spotted turned out to be years old, said Maj. Cynthia S. Ryan, a spokeswoman for the Civil Air Patrol Nevada Wing, speaking at an afternoon news conference in the town of Minden, whose airport is the base for the search.

Minden is just west of Yerington, the town closest to the Flying-M Ranch, an exclusive retreat owned by the hotel magnate William Barron Hilton, where Mr. Fossett took off from a private airstrip Monday morning. His wife of more than 30 years, Peggy, stayed behind, awaiting his return so they could leave Nevada together on a private jet later in the day.

Mr. Fossett, 63, is a veteran aviator known for his quests to set world records. In 2002, on his sixth attempt, he became the first person to complete a solo, uninterrupted flight around the world in a hot-air balloon. Last year he made the longest nonstop flight in aviation history: 26,389 miles in 76 hours, in a lightweight experimental plane.

He also has an application pending with the Bureau of Land Management to try to break the land-speed record, currently more than 766 miles an hour, in a jet-powered car in the Nevada desert sometime next year. Mr. Hasley and others have speculated that on his flight Monday, Mr. Fossett was scouting dry lake beds where he could challenge that record.

Mr. Fossett, whose feats also include the climbing of the Matterhorn and Mount Kilimanjaro, has extraordinary skills as an outdoorsman, and Mr. Hasley said, "I'm hopeful even if he did crash, he would be able to survive."

Steve Fossett Missing: Help find him by searching satellite imagery

Welcome to Amazon Mechanical Turk. To help in the search for Steve Fossett, please click here and select the "Work on HITs" button. New users will be asked to complete a short registration process before they can start identifying images.

Background

On Monday, September 3, 2007, Steve Fossett, the first person to fly a plane around the world without refueling and the first person to fly around the world in a balloon went missing in Nevada. An airplane he was flying failed to return. No one has any idea where he is.

Through the generous efforts of individuals at several organizations, detailed satellite imagery has been made available for his last known whereabouts.

Instructions

You will be shown a single satellite image. The task is to flag any satellite images which contain foreign objects that may resemble Steve's airplane or parts of a plane. Steve's plane will show up as a regular object with sharp edges, white or nearly white, about 21 pixels long and 30 pixels in wingspan.

Notes

If in doubt, be conservative and mark the image. For complete coverage, we've set up this HIT such that multiple people will cover the same area several times over. Please do your best, but do not worry that missing one little detail will be tragic. It will get caught.

Marked images will be sent to a team of specialists who will determine if they contain information on the whereabouts of Steve Fossett.

Friends and family of Steve Fossett would like to thank you for helping them with this cause.

Steve Fosset may still be alive, Lt Col Ryan with the US Civil Air Patrol who has been searching for him believes that Fossett may have faked his own death because of personal problems or concerns over his financial affairs (boring): http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/2707_steve_fossett.shtml

In a more interesting theory, a friend of Fosset claims he is alive and in the Fourth Dimension... yes, that's right: During his flights over the Nevada desert Steve Fossett discovered a path to the fourth dimension, which has to do with the space-time continuum, so he could be anywhere or anywhen. In a phone message left on his answering machine Steve mentioned he had made "a great discovery that would change the world" and that he would try to arrange for his friend to come visit him in the next few weeks to witness it: http://knudsennews.blogspot.com/2008/03/steve-fossett-is-alive.html

Steve Fossett is alive!!

I had watched Steve's amazing feats over the years, marvelling at his capacity to test the limits of the envelope in so many, many ways and was saddened by his bizarre ending.

You can imagine, then, my surprise when, on April 16, 2008 I received an email from an acquaintance of mine which included the following;
"Another amazing thing happened yesterday evening! I found a Link in the Lightbox on the Snoedel site, to a message by Steve Fossett, who disappeared in 2007...." (More readily, see http://offplanetinfo.bravehost.com/info%202008.htm for this and other messages.)
......"After some minutes I wondered how it would be like, living at the other side as Steve now did. And then all of a sudden I feel a new energy, that appeared to be Steve Fossett himself. And guess what he asked me to do? To draw your attention to his channelled information! Keep me informed!"

Needless to say, I was a little surprised by this email, although I was already aware of these reported channellings by his friend Jerry Brown. I had read them with interest but had not given them much attention as they were not of any relevance to me - or so I thought.

The following day (my time) I received a second email containing the following;
"In addition to my earlier email today, Steve should like you to ask (name deleted) to be the for your questions available channel (sic). Obviously he is looking forward to having a means of communication with you."

This had become impossible to ignore, so I began to follow it up. I had no idea what this could be about. I was unable to contact the individual suggested, so I emailed my dear friend and extraordinary channel, Carolyn Evers. Carolyn made contact with Steve.

Some weeks went by and I occasionally asked Carolyn what was happening in her conversation with Steve. Gradually it emerged that he wanted to share with the world what had happened to him. More importantly, he had a message he wanted to share with the world about what was unfolding in our very near future.

Steve explains how he disappeared - "My aircraft with me inside flew into what appeared to be a great light. I know this sounds like some science fiction story, but I had seen these lights in the past and I wanted to investigate. The lights didn't seem to be permanently attached to the Earth, but rather seemed to float down from higher up.

"As I came closer, the light seemed to be behind what appeared to be a mist. Then that is all I remember until I woke up from what appeared to be a sleep and found myself upon a table. Nothing prepared me for this experience.

"I had beings around me and they seemed friendly enough, but definitely not of the Earth variety. They didn't seem quite like what one would think of when they think of extraterrestrials, but rather they were more humanoid-like in appearance, but again they were ethereal and I must say gentle."

He then explains why he wants to communicate with us - "Therefore, I am on a mission of sorts. There is nothing that I can do to come back and since I am here, I am willing to do what I can to help awaken people to not only the pursuits of the military to control the world, but to tell people what lay before them by way of earth changes and weather changes."

This extraordinary information is being released by Carolyn in e-book form on the Anniversary of Steve's disappearance, September 3rd, 2008. You will find it at www.SteveFossettLives.com. I'm sure you will find it as fascinating as I did. I have no doubt those who knew Steve personally will recognise what is written as coming from Steve, because of the personal details he shares and the way he speaks about aspects of his life. This is breathtaking material and will change how most of us view ourselves and our world.

Maybe Steve can send us some tourists from over there - aliens have always been welcome and we're pretty fuzzy on time anyway.
