Fall and the signs of it.
by elbert on 10/02/08 09:05 AM

Fall seems to have come to Ambergris. The birds have been returning this week, Herons, warblers and the most noticeable at the moment is the swallow down from Cozumel. Opportunistic feeders is the term used for them, were offering the opportunity to eat lots of bugs right now. A cool north wind is blowing the bugs up front after the rains have helped spawn them.
The name Cozumel comes from the Mayan word Cuzamil-Peten, which means "Land of the Swallows’,
They live as a giant colony there in the cliffs and visit us in mass when we offer up bugs.

Thanks for the info about the swallows. They fly so fast I can’t get a take on them. I do get a periodic flash of yellow or rust. Have you ID’ed them?

I had a wonderful experience with them yesterday. I was on my golf cart when the BIG storm hit. I pulled in under an Almond tree by Mary Hawthorn’s house to sit it out. Ahead of me, in an area around a building without trees, these swallows worked their tails off. It was a big flocked and they hunted for almost a half hour. Towards the end I was getting some mosquitoes around me and then a hand full of the birds started working up the road under the tree canopies. A few of them came really close. They moved too fast to photograph but I did get a decent shot of them sitting on a wire after the rain passed.
