So do you think the current conflicts can also be won?

Peter, the answer is yes without question. I do not want to hi-jack this thread, so I will pm you.
One of the greatest Generals that ever put a uniform on had this to say several decades ago:

My aim then was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us.

Old history, VN was lost on the political front. Hard to fight an enemy (support of the population? I doubt it.), who did not balk at killing and otherwise intimidating the locals to get support by fear. I've met a lot of the people who escaped, and they seem to verify that.

Having an "ally" in a trouble spot never hurts. As to the formation of Israel, I doubt GWB and Cheney were behind it. I do have some sympathy for the Palestinians, but apparently more than their Arab neighbors have, as they are willing to fight for the Palestinian cause, but seem to have little tolerance for the people who are pretty much treated as pariahs.

I get to talk to a lot of people (from elsewhere), and rely more on their experiences than I do on the media reports.

"Bush Invades Syria"!!!!!!!!!!!!

laugh

OR: "US troops kill and capture Al Qaeda in Iraq members hiding out in Syrian border town"

Your headlines may vary depending upon the ax you are grinding.

I hope that someday we can put aside our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

Let's hope it has the desired effect then, and not the exact opposite.
