I am sure you know about the unprecedented floods in mainland Belize which have a devastating impact on many poor families dependant on subsistence farming. Their crops are gone, their few possessions swept away or ruined by the floods, in many cases their life stock has drowned leaving them with nothing and the water is not expected to recede for at least a week or longer which means there are many people in really desperate need of support. If anybody contacts you who would like to help, please let me know, I can put them in touch with a number of reliable agencies who will make sure that everything really reaches the ones in need.

My apologies for going around with the hat in my hand, but it really is for a good cause.

Contact Belize Red Cross who will 'induct' you to help people house to house to assess needs and hand out supplies.

Clothing should be directed to the Red Cross Belize City. I hear that from the villages in the Belize River valley, NEMO had many requests for baby formula and diapers (medium and large). In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to buy these on the island where they are way more expensive than on the mainland and then send them over. It would be better to have somebody on the mainland buy these items wholesale so that everybody gets the biggest bang for their buck.

Kevin Gonzalez & NEMO are requesting help from the community for areas on the mainland.
Kevin was sent to help coordinate the Belize River Valley and things are pretty bad there.
One of the more immediate needs for Lemonal, Rancho Dolores, Maypen and Crooked Tree are:

Baby Formula: Nestum, Cerelac, Rice Cereal, Lactogen, Klim 123 & Lasco
Baby Bottles
Baby Diapers: Large & Extra Large

The could also use a few extra Life Vests/ Flash Lights / Rain Jackets

** No Clothes Please **

Anyone willing to help can leave these item at Tropic Cargo care of Kevin Gonzalez / NEMO / Belize City

Bank accounts have been opened to help flood victims. At the Belize Bank the account number is 1120458 and at Atlantic Bank it is 1000185773. Both accounts are under the name of Cayo Disaster Relief Fund.

The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry in conjunction with Western Union are collecting for flood victims. The donations will be given to the Belize Red Cross. Western Union will match deposits, dollar for dollar up to a threshold of $50K.

Now THAT's a generous offer the other banks could well emulate.

Dear Member,

I trust that you have seen my earlier e-mail soliciting funds for the flood victims in an effort to assist them in their time of need. As the Western Union Agent in Belize, we have been able to get the Western Union Foundation to match all funds we raise up to $50,000. I appeal to all of you to aid us in ensuring we can raise at least $50,000.00 so as to be able to give the Belize Red Cross $100,000.00 to assist those affected. Also, The Radisson is conducting a car wash this Saturday to raise funds for this worthy cause. They will contribute their funds through us so as to double their contributions. So take your vehicles and get them washed.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Atlantic Group of Companies, Belize Electricity Ltd., Belize Diesel and Equipment Co. Ltd., Bravo Motors, Sunrise Realty, Belize Unit Trust Corporation Ltd. and International Services Limited. With their contributions we have been able to raise over $13,000.00.

Thanks again and I invite everyone to give generously.

Regards,

Omar Ortiz

For every dollar raised Western Union is putting in a dollar. Every little bit helps. This is going to the Belize Red Cross who are on the front lines of assistance.
