It was certainly no vacation, no pleasure trip. Next week, the NHL Network is going to show everyone what Patrik Elias saw on his UNICEF journey to Belize two months ago. The Devils' star hopes the documentary produces help for those in such need.

"It's going to show the bad things, the living conditions, the poverty, the everyday life, the need there is to help them," said Elias, an active UNICEF spokesman.

"All the kids in the hospital, 1-year-old, 2-years-old, HIV-positive, and with AIDS, that's part of it," Elias said. "That, and the areas where the poor people live. The poverty is so bad. They're eating garbage."

The hour-long documentary of his September journey to the Central American nation debuts Thursday at 9 p.m. and will re-air Friday at 4 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 9 p.m.

Wouldn't it be nice if he also documents all the agencies and people that have mobilized to help? We just connected a great dramatic troupe from LA who completed 8 performances in Belize City and Belmopan last week. They went to different high schools and performed "R U Positive" which is an inspiring piece of theater spoken in adolescent voices.
Compar is a Belize group that goes to villages and trains "rovers" who go in to the homes of new mothers to teach early education and intervention skills.
There is a need for more education, yes. But there are people out there working really hard to provide services that need acknowledgment.
"Healachild" is also here and they bring free surgical services to babies and children.
Maybe more coordination of effort would help,, and no more enabling those who sell drugs to children and exploit young girls, and working with leaders in the field. There is a lot going on to deal with these issue. I just wish someone would come down and do a documentary on the unsung heros.
