I would post this on the business Forum but don't think the Tour Guides would read it there.
Belizean Tour Guides are required to have a Police Record in order to acquire or renew their tour Guide Licenses.
The 'Police Record ' is a statement from the Police Department that states a person does not have a criminal record.
The Tour guides simply submit two photos attached to a brief application to the Police department. The cost is $12.bz. The local Police then submit to Belmopan offices to look in their files to locate a record or not and then issue a printed statement to the applicant. The Tour Guide then attaches this to his or her Tour Guide renewal application. Similar requirement as in applying for residency or citizenship.
In 1999 we had 706 Tour Guides since then the number has grown to over a thousand and growing even larger and faster still, the majority being from Ambergris Caye. I'm sure this is a lot of paperwork for the already busy San Pedro Police Department.
Tourist Police monitor Tour Guides, checking for their license with regularity and expensive fines are issued, so Tour Guides are diligent about acquiring Police Records for their renewals, and the Police are cheerful, helpful and quick about supplying Tour Guides with the required paperwork.
