is World AIDS Day. Actually, tomorrow is. But we are commemorating it on San Pedro today.

It is very possible you know someone in Belize who has died of AIDS but you never knew they were infected and you probably don't know the true cause of death. HIV/AIDS has a huge stigma here and you just can't guess who is infected. Women are now the most significant increase in infections. There is a march this morning at 11:00 at Central Park, a fair and free rapid testing all day. Please come down.

To put it all in context here are some of the most up to date figures on HIV/AIDS in Belize.

HIV/AIDS in Belize

3,400: Estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS by the end of 2007

2.1%: Estimated percentage of adults (ages 15-49) living with HIV/AIDS by the end of 2007

59%: Estimated percentage of HIV cases that occured among women (ages 15-49) by the end of 2007

over 200: Estimated number of children (ages 0-15) living with HIV/AIDS by the end of 2007

over 200: Estimated number of deaths due to AIDS during 2007

And outside of Belize... This holiday, Starbucks presents three delectable ways to give and receive. Every time you enjoy a (STARBUCKS)RED EXCLUSIVE beverage (Peppermint Mocha, Gingersnap and Truffle Espresso) at participating locations in the US and Canada between November 27, 2008 and January 2, 2009, we'll give 5 to the Global Fund to help save lives in Africa.

Join us in support of World AIDS Day. We're giving 5 to the Global Fund for every hand-crafted Starbucks beverage sold on December 1, 2008 at participating US and Canada locations.*

If people in Belize test positive, do they have access to the proper medical attention and anti-viral drugs?

As far as I am aware, there are no stats specifically for San Pedro. Personally, I would guess that the ratio would be higher here because of the number of tourists passing through and the general transience of the community. Those figures are of recorded infection.

Pam is correct. Treatment is available, but if you have HIV or AIDS in the USA or Europe, you might assume that your treatment would be superior to the treatment available to those in developing countries.

I read something recently about a condom machine installed in San Pedro. I was very happy to see as it seems a long overdue step.
Does anyone know if there are plans to expand from that single machine?
