If anyone knows anyone coming to Belize from the UK in the next few weeks, could they ask them to buy and bring a current copy of a moderately-sized Oxford English Dictionary, not the smallest one but one about the size of a hardback novel? I left mine in England and after all this American influence I find myself doubting my ability to spell words!

You can buy them in the city. Stationary House, Angelus Press and there is another store - can't think of its name right now.

Thank you for that helpful post Weile. Trouble is all the web dictionaries seem to be concerned with American spelling, just as the Microsoft spell checker is (even when one specifies British English) so I need a proper dictionary. Thinking about it I also need a thesaurus. Remember that the official language of Belize is British English, not the American version.

I have never got to grips with the phonetic pronunciation guide given in most dictionaries, including the OED. So from them I wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce tomato or potato.

Amanda - you may be right and Peter has been afflicted with the "seeing R's where none exist" syndrome. LOL
