We plan on renting a car in Belize City & driving to Placencia, with stops along the way. Is it better to take the Manatee Hwy or Hummingbird to Dangriga? I read that the Manatee isn't paved but it sure does look like a lot shorter route.

Also, any "must see" or "must do" stops along the way? We want to be in Placencia for my birthday on Jan. 11, but will have a couple days to get there.

Thanks for all the advice thus far. This message board has been very helpful!

Shorter in distance doesn't necessarily mean shorter in time when driving in Belize.

Exactly why I posted the question, Shuffles. I'm curious about:

1. the difference in driving time between the two routes, and

2. if one if is more scenic or interesting than the other

Stay on the Hummingbird Highway.

I don't think the Manatee Highway is passable at this time due to a bridge that was washed out in June of this year.

Thanks for the info!

Any "must see" stops on the drive from Belize City to Placencia?

You save 20 mins using the unpaved Manatee/Coastal road. I use the paved Hummingbird because its paved and a very scenic drive.

the manatee may be shorter mile-wise but just as long or longer time-wise. it is a crappy road with no services along the way.
stick to the hummingbird.
i would recommend the zoo, possibly the marie sharps factory near dangriga.
mostly just enjoy the scenery.

Several of the car rental companies also impose restrictions on using the Manatee. One told me they don't permit their vehicles on the Manatee, and another said the CDW deductible amount you're responsible for in case of accident is higher if the accident occurs on the Manatee. The reason given is that accidents are more common on the Manatee, mainly due to the loose gravel surface.
