Will an Obama administration change course?
Will Obama revisit Cuban policy so early in his new administration? Arguably, he faces many more critical challenges in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and now Gaza.

But for the United States, the embargo has become a double-edged sword. At the United Nations in October, the General Assembly voted once again for a resolution urging the United States to repeal its trade embargo against Cuba, as it has for 17 years in a row.

The tally in favor of Havana was overwhelming, 185 countries to 3. Only Israel and Palau joined the U.S. in supporting the 47-year-old embargo. Obama's transition team is being told that easing the Cuba policy would be a quick way to win friends in this hemisphere.

Would the Cuban People be any better off if relations were normalised between the US and Cuba?
The overall economy and trade with the rest of the world has nearly nothing to do with the US embargo. So why are they still a poor country?

NOW, let's see this is usually the point where jesse finds an article in common dreams showing how "happy" the Cuban people are compared to the US. Start digging Im sure it's there!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Fidel Castro lead Cuban gov may have allowed itself to "trade" with other countries but doesn't allow a free enterprise system for its' own people.

The poor there in the past weren't allowed to purchase simple garden tools in order to plant a garden to feed their own family. They had to rely exclusively on the government. Seed and fertilizer were issued only to government approved farmers who grew for the government.

Fidel Castro's era was an extreme example of a socialist government. Without some free enterprise they will all eventually crumble just like Russia.

And just like Russia with the fall of socialism comes the rise of free enterprise resulting in an improved conditions.

Note to Danny2: Many in the US are not "happy" either but how many of our "poor" set out to sea on over loaded rafts just hoping we'll drift somewhere else......anywhere else?

Thanks B-N-U, for a comment that is something greater than rhetoric. I was not aware of the condition you described. Unfortunately Castro vows to "continue" the "Revolution",,, and of course that means Bush will "continue" to keep me from "Cohibas".

I certainly hope Mr. Obama is up to the OVERWHELMING task to which he has been elected. IMHO Cuba is at the bottom of the list of things his administration needs to address. His own country is in turmoil . . .
