Just got back from AC (Mayan Princess). I can say there wasn't much of a problem with mosquitos but the flies are REALLY bad (even in the constant wind).

Some people in my group did get eaten up by the sand fleas (or whatever) although I didn't have much of a problem with anything. I had a couple of bites from flies (I believe) all week.

The flies are seasonal (very short season). There's a rumour that Bruce from BCs Bar brought them from Australia years ago.

Jesse, Firstly, Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
Secondly, how long is 'seasonal' flies please? Arriving on 2 Dec, ready to do battle with mozzies, but flies..... I reeeally hate flies! Maybe I should bring a flamethrower or something....?
I won't let it spoil my trip tho' - am really looking forward to my first visit, and meeting (hopefully!) some of you people from the message boards! Keep the beer cold!

I gave Ada at the Coconuts bar a fly swatter.
She was a serial fly killer ASAP. So I think even the flys are on Belize time.

There were hardly any sand fleas near San Pedro( cept on the backside). Caye Caulker and Half Moon were miserable in that regard.
DEET doesn't seem to get 'em. Put alot of baby oil on your legs (it drowns them).
You'll see black spots appear - but that'll just be the dead ones.

I agree that deet doesn't seem to stop the "teeth that fly" and baby oil does do the job well. The only thing is that you smell like a newborn baby, which may or may not be a good thing depending on what image you want to achieve....hmmm

Brill! Got the DEET, will get the baby oil, won't bring the flamethrower, but the flyswat sounds a great idea!
I was always under the impression that if you drunk enough alchohol the critters steered WELL clear of you....??
Think I'll test this theory too! See you in a week!

LOL @ Sandcrab.

A nice coat of Coconut suntan oil is nice....does the same thing and smells really good as you bake in the sun.

Almost good enough to eat.....LOL [Linked Image]

In keeping with the assumption that this is a family type message board, and as much as I like the idea, I think it would be better to say that the aroma would be more like a pina colada that would be drinkable instead of eatable. Geez, that was a long sentence...
