Do you know which US cel carriers get reception on Ambergris?

I know some AT&T users can get reception here, but depends on what type of service they have. Have also had some guests with Blackberrys that work as well. I think it has more to do with the service that the owner subscribes to. I have even had guests that change their service plan for a brief time while they are on vacation, however, it is generally very expensive to receive and make calls on their phones.

Why not just use a local sim card?

Verizon and AT&T have both worked. AT&T roams on the Digicell (BTL) GSM network and Verizon roams on the SMART CDMA network. It is always best to call your home provider beforehand and notify them of your travel and make sure this type of roaming is supported and unlocked. Agreed that a local Belize cell is best while here, although sometimes not an option for folks who need to stay in touch with their number. Also expect to pay up to $5/min for BOTH inbound and outbound calls.
