We're coming mid-April. Want to fish a lot, but not all the time. Interested in going on organized fishing trips..but would also like to take a canoe or kayak...or fish off a dock etc. We'll be staying at Journeys End. Here are our questions... Basically, we need to know what to bring.
1. We have 2 Penn Rods (6 foot..medium action). We can't bring too much.We plan on bringing spinning rods with 20 lb. test line. Would this be sufficient for multiple kinds of Belizean fish? What kinds of lures should be bring, jigs?...what size hook...wire leader... Is live bait available? As much info. as possible....

Most of the time, the best fishing is done off boats with Belizean fishing guides. A good one to contact is Luis Caliz at 011-501-26-5025 in San Pedro Town (reserve ahead). I'm sure Journey's End also has their own guides or particular guides they like to use. When you do that, the guides will have all the gear you need to fish, including rods, hooks, bait, and lures. You can catch fish off the dock and beach, but not anyway near as many as off a boat. Twenty pound test in fine, but no more than that is needed. Size 10 hooks are the best. A 5-6 ft light rod is the most fun (and will readily land a 3-5 ft barracuda). Virtually any surface or shallow-dive lure will work, although live bait also works wells. Getting live bait if you're not with a guide would be difficult as they catch they as needed. There are no bait shops per se.

Your 20# Penn outfits will be more than enough for reef fishing.I'd recommend 10-15 lb.test, in order to use smaller baits. Small jigs and grubs will work fine, but you'll probably have more success with cut bait. Unless you want to go after tarpon or a large grouper, the 20# outfit will probably be overkill for inshore fishing.I wouldn't mess with wire leader, unless specifically after a large barracuda (and probably not even then).
