Thinking of going to Chetumal to do some personal shopping and Big Mac eating. I want to be near the mall(or best shopping area)I think and will spend the night.

What is the best hotel that is right by there so I can walk to shopping? Or is there a better way to do it?

Thanks!

We always get a room at Los Cocos. Good price, nice room and GREAT restaurant. Taxi to shopping mall is about 50 pesos.....

Wow shuffles, you're getting ripped off on your taxi fare. Its 15 pesos. I've noticed a problem with spanish speakers that they often mistake the word fifteen with fifty.

There aren't any nice hotels near the mall, most gringos stay at Los Cocos or the Holiday Inn in the downtown area. The downtown central area has many choices for staying the night.

The St. Theresa is next to the bus terminal and it looks o.k., but there is more to do downtown at night when you're tired of the mall.

FYI, you can buy a Mexican chip for your Belizean phone at the TelCel stand right as you enter the mall at CHEDRAUI. Its 140 pesos which right now is around $10 U.S. and comes with 100 pesos credit on it. It is very handy to have a Mexican chip for your phone when traveling.

Just looked at my post and I was wrong. It is 15 pesos. Thanks for the info on the chip, I usually buy one of the phone cards, and the chip sounds like a much better deal.

Yes you need a club membership. It is around $40 U.S. for 1-2 people, if you already have a valid Sam's Club card from anywhere else in the world they will honor it. Probably the membership price is lower since the dollar is so strong in Mexico right now.

Can anyone suggest places of interest for us in Chetumal? Where would you go while there?

Like food, stores, etc.....
Also, anyone know how to avoid paying duty on everything when we come back? smile
