Hi Everybody

I had the most wonderful dive the other day I just have to tell everyone!!

I dived Tuffy Canyons - right in front of San Pedro Town last weekend. As soon as I submurged and looked around I couldn't believe my eyes... had to be at least 10 dolphins swimming around just within visibility range. They were all assorted sizes, a lot of large ones and a number of much smaller ones which I guess may have been babies because they stuck extremely close to the larger animals. My divemaster (and also PADI certified dive instructor with Barefoot Watersports <[email protected]> , Roberto Canul told me that some of them were mating.

Anyway, for the entire 35 minute dive the dolphins stayed with us. They played some neat antics and would dive down real deep and then torpedo to the surface. Our safety cover man up top, Orlando, and Dawn O'Connor, one of the owners of Barefoot Watersports, said that they played around the boat on the surface the whole time too!!

So, an incredible and enjoyable trip was had by all.

Oh, and by the way, I also saw a very large nurse shark very close up. When we looked under a shelf in the coral I counted over 10 large lobsters in one hole - I think they were waving at me. Groupers were everywhere as well as some of the most colourful reef fish I have ever seen.

This was one of the most incredible wildlife dives I have ever experienced.

Since the hurricane the wild life on and around the reef has been prolific. Each time I have been to Hol Chan recently I have spotted turtles.

If you have never tried snorkeling or diving now is a wonderful time to learn on Ambergris Caye.

Just had to share my experience. Okay, I'll stop now. Bye

Wow! Nice report. I'm greener than a moray!
Now if that has convinced any of you to try scuba there are two ways to get started easily. 1.Go to your local dive shop and do all the classwork, you can do your check-out dives (the dive version of a final exam) at AC.
2.If you're not quite that sure about getting certified, go to one of the dive shops on AC that offer Discover Scuba. You watch a video, learn a few saftey skills, then you are closely escorted on a fairly shallow dive that same day.
Either way, don't let Amanda have all the fun ;-)

Amanda,
This dolphin thing is making my "child bride" SWMBO absolutely nuts! A few days ago this topic came up regarding shore sightings and she finally decided that Jesse and I were making it up.

We have been to San Pedro more times that we can count, and have only seen dolphins ONE time (following the Winnie to CC about 5 years ago). Have you seen this before while diving in the area?

I guess I know how I will spending my Christmas holiday....I'll be looking for dolphins in SP when I could be doing far more "constructive" things.

Choo Choo - Looking for dolphins with one of those blue things in your hand doesn't sound like a bad way to spend the holiday!

We have seen dolphins several times from shore and from the dock in front of The Palms. Each time has been in the early morning, before we could even think about holding one of those blue drinks!

I have also seen pink elephants from BC's ... but that is a different story ... :^)

Thank you - what a wonderful report. Did you get any pictures? I know people who have been diving and taking u/w pics for years who would have died for this experience. I have been fortunate enough to have had Dolphins "run with the boat" on various trips, but every time the boat stopped and/or people got in the water, they disappeared.
Since your dive master thought they were mating maybe it is a once a year type of thing. I would love to hear more.

lmarquis,
This dolphin thing has all the signs of one of those holiday pivotal issues. You do have a very valid point however regarding the proper beverage for the most efficient conduct of "Shore Patrol".

Let's see, if one were to leave the relative comfort of the veranda with an initial quantity of "fuel" for patrolling it would be a very simple matter to have indentified, in advance, adequate "refueling" stops that had the proper combination and colors of this important energy source.

As for early morning patrolling (which seems to be indicated as the best time for spotting), does anybody who has ever seen me in SP really think that coffee cup is full of coffee!!

Early morning partrolling - I like that one. For my early morning patrolling, I prefer Baileys, Brandy and coffee. Goes down so smooth and you really are having coffee. Top with a dollop of whipped cream and you are ready to go dolphin sightseeing. Only on vacation, of course. Better stop, getting too much off the subject!

Hi Scubalady

No... we didn't have a camera between us. All kicked ourselves later. Sorry.

And everybody else... we do remember that alcohol and diving don't mix, right???

I often times drink the blue one and see pink elephants at BC's, but that is another story.....
