I'm planning a June trip for 10 us & would like some subjective advice from you all. We are looking to "tour" the area 1/2 the time & lounge on the beach/by the pool the other 1/2. We would like to stay in a villa/thatched roof type of place right on the water. No hotel/motel type. Nightlife nearby a plus. What part of the island would best accomodate our preferences?

I've just started my research in the last couple days & I'm on info overload. It's all blending together now. You're help would be of much help.

Probably want south of the cut, and most likely a "villa" type accomodations. Paradise Tradewinds, Paradise Villas, The Palms, Coral Bay Villas, Banyan Bay, Caribbean Villas all come to mind. Some have pools some don't. Those without pools have decent swimming and sunbathing areas in most cases. The thatched roof affairs, although great for a picture and to talk about back home, aren't quite as "Caribbean Romantic" as they might appear. Villas are generally much larger, brighter, and have the full range of creature comforts. Just my humble opinion.

Nothing's too far in SP, unless you get WAY north of the cut. The lodgings mentioned are all within very easy walking distance of nightlife (if one is so inclined).

I like Caribe Island 3mi south of town--that is the only drawback
The Victoria now has a pool and is wonderful--but far 2 1/2 mi south

Of course the primo question is What's your budget?

The Village is a very nice place with thatched huts....has a pool which is a big plus, in case you might want to go swimming and the ocean doesn't have the best conditions. Prices are relatively low, but the only problem is, the hurricane hit them really bad, and last time I e-mailed them they said that they might not be open for a while-just telling you. Last time I went there I stayed at Royal Palm Villas....I absolutely ADORED it! The pool is beautiful, and there is a dive shop, dock, restaurant, and beach. I think there is a tennis court too.
