elbert - that is some real interesting reading you referenced there.

in the second article posted on page one, the opening sentences read like this:

"Ambergris Caye is the most popular tourist destination and it is experiencing a construction boom despite a drop in visitors’ arrivals. Mega projects such as the controversial South Beach need an enormous quantity of gravel and limestone, which are being barged in at a high cost from the mainland. So there are now plans for a proposed quarry close to the Bacalar Chico Reserve. But could this turn out to be an environmental nightmare? Jose Sanchez headed to the island to find out.

Jose Sanchez, Reporting
Behind the idyllic beachfront property of Sueño Del Mar, North Island Development Company Limited has decided to establish a quarry from which tons of limestone would be trucked to San Pedro, at a fraction of the current cost.

Fidel Ancona, Manager, North Island Development Company Ltd.
”We have a lease for 50 acres of land. And we are going to extract rock, limestone to create gravel for the future development of the north end.

does thins seem kind of conflicting info to anyone but me? it says the reason to quarry is that south beach needs stuff.

then it says it will truck it to san pedro town.

then it says "for the FUTURE development" of the north end. not anything current or yet planned.

it then quotes something about roads are already agreed on north and south - is the implication the material might be for road construction up there?

where does it definitively state what it will be used for to help justify its inception?

Moratorium sounds good. No new development. No need for a quarry. Sit back, let the dust settle, and get it right the first time.

Moose Keep an open mind and something good may fall in.

Grace, Transporting across land is only going to happen for use north of the Bridge. I can see no way unless they build a stronger bridge that loads could cross. Therefore gravel transport to SP or South of SP can only be accomplished by barge.

Elbert has a much better handle on this than I. This could have other goals than are being publicized. If the gravel can not be used for cement and I personally do not know this, then it will be used for road and building fill I would guess.

Yes you are right; it has the potential to change the character of the area north of the bridge.
