Belizeans may not be aware, while they sip their delicious Belikin, that the industry is being protected. But, the Jamaican government is aware that Belizeans are not being exposed to the little squat bottle of beer. They claim that Belize breaking the treaties of CARICOM that outlaws protectionism in the region.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Minister Baugh, claims that steps are being taken to increase free trade in the Caribbean. He accuses Belize, among others, of being anti-free trade and treaty breakers.
Minister Baugh says that he will give Belize a couple more weeks to come up with a compromise. Otherwise, he has made it clear that he will not be afraid to take the matter before the dispute settlement mechanism of CARICOM.
