Doesn't seem to be much info out there about this. Hopefully this article will help to put some people's minds to rest.

Yes there was a tsunami watch notice put out - but it included a paragraph that stated that historically tsunamis have not occurred. The watch was for about 50 minutes.

That's the world we live in. I guess it's better to warn and have nothing happen, than not to warn at all, but eventually people may start to ignore the warnings if most are false alarms.

Moose Keep an open mind and something good may fall in.

The earthquake occurred so close to Belize that a tsunami wave would have arrived 8 minutes later. That doesn't provide enough time to wait for analysis.

The whole point of the article is to reassure people that there ISN'T much threat from a tsunami in Belize. The fault that caused this earthquake is the wrong type of fault to cause a large tsunami. As an ex-geologist (there are no seismologists in Belize, so I'm as well qualified as anyone else to comment), and having done the research to reassure ourselves, I thought it was important to publish this. I am finding from the searches strings done on SEs to find my blog that people are really worried in case of future waves, and honestly with no need!

The post reads....

There were no tsunami waves caused by this earthquake at all, despite some panic that there may be. The warning was taken off after about half an hour, but many people didn’t know it had been, so the panic continued. There is very little (but still some) risk of a tsunami from this fault. Other active faults are further from Belize....

Read the rest of this post and more about the science behind the quake at Reef Diaries

Thanks
