How many places take credit cards on Abergris Caye? I'll be spending two weeks on the island and need to know how much cash I need to bring.

Thanks for the help.

Almost universal, though people like street vendors don't take them. That's Visa and Master - Amex is far less widely accepted.

They're quite expensive for the merchants, more so than in the US etc, so your bargaining power will be greater if you take cash.

Travellers' cheques are also widely accepted, and give you almost the bargaining power of cash.

I haven't found a restaurant that didn't take AMEX, although there are probably a few. Visa and MC should be fine everywhere.

Best bet is CASH......as much as you can bring. There is a limit of US$ 5,000 to bring in without declaring it.

With US$...actual bills... the rate is exactly 2 to 1.

Your best card is Capital One. They don't hit you with a foreign exchange fee. This can be a savings of about 2%.

Don't forget that nasty foreign transaction fee when you use your credit card.

I prefer the saftey and convenience of CC for dinners, lodging and excursions.

I always bring plenty of cash also though. We usually hop from bar to bar and have 1 or 2 drinks at each -- it just makes more sense to pay cash when doing that.

I will have a Belikin -- put it on klcman's tab.
