Hey...hopefully this is only an academic question to settle a bet, but if, heaven forbid, I did need to shelter my sailboat from east storm winds and was coming down from the north end, should I (1) go through the San Pedro River around into the SP lagoon, or (2) go around the south end of the island to the Marco Gonzalez area and/or Laguna de Boca Ciego. Thanks for some advice.

Depends entirely on your draft. The typical cruising sailboat with a fixed keel will draw at least 4 ft., usually 5-6 ft. Then you'd have to go south several miles below the tip of Ambergris Caye and then turn west/northwestward to pick up the "sugar barge channel" which takes you up into the Bay of Chetumal. You could then procede (very carefully) up into the Northern River to hideout. I hope you never have to do this.
