I've heard that the water is very shallow. Can you swim or snorkel from the beach or do you need to take a boat out to the reef?

Yes the water is shallow it dont look that far from shore but I would suggest take a tour to the reef to hol chan,mexico rocks for safety reasons ,boats going up and down the coast of the isle plus the guides can tell u pointers when u get to the snorkel area---and its cheap enough to get a guide for it

definently take a boat. the difference in what you see is worth many, many times the cost of the boat ride..

Thanks for you saying that my girlfriend and i had another couple take a kayak to Mexico rocks which we suggested them not to do they did nothing happened thankfully
