Here are a few things I priced out for the fun of it for early to mid September. From.........via Cancun..............via ... JFK..........635.14 (jetblue/maya)...657.00 (AA via MIA) Cincinnati...543.14 (USA3000/maya)...733.00 (Delta via ATL) St. Louis....543.14 (USA3000/maya)...657.00 (AA via DFW) LA...........604.00 (Delta/maya).....495.00 (AA via MIA) Detroit......629.00 (USAir/maya).....680.00 (Cont via IAH)
So, just a few examples, but in most cases, there is a cost savings in connecting via Cancun vs MIA/ATL/DFW/IAH.
The biggest cost savings appear to be where you have a direct flight from your departure airport to Cancun, which is much more likely than having one that goes direct to Belize.
The point of this post was that even with what appears to be an outrageous price for the maya flight, when totaled with the low cost cancun flights, the trip is going to generally be cheaper flying through cancun on maya.
Almost certainly you are correct that you can find last minute deals on the discount carriers to Cancun while you will almost never find them into BZE.
I would really be interested in having Maya link up with one of those airlines to provide one price travel into BZE via Cancun with simple one-stop booking. That would be cool.
We once spent a year and a cool million and it rained so hard nobody came to the Grand Opening. It wasn't like we could just *cancel the flight, the caterers and orchestra still had to be paid. We didn't have a contingency plan to fly or not and it still paid off...eventually. Maya has bitten off a big chunk, and I'd like nothing more than to see them come out well.
