A 50-acre marina has been proposed by Placencia Marina Ltd. to be located
300 feet off the beach at Copal Beach and The Placencia.
The marina will have 210 slips that will accommodate boats from 30' to 200'
in length.
The marina will be accessed by a bridge 6' high and 16 feet wide that will
accommodate golf carts and electric vehicles in addition to pedestrian
traffic. A 28' section in the middle of the bridge will be 15' high to
allow boats to pass under the bridge.
100,000 cubic yards of fill will need to be dredged from the sea in a 20
acre area.
This project is approximately 2 miles from the Ara Macao marina, which is
approved for 400 boats of up to 100 feet in length, bringing the total slips
in this area to 610.
An EIA has been submitted for the proposed marina and can be accessed at
http://www.doe.gov.bz/EIAs.html.A public hearing will be held in Seine Bight at 6:30 PM at the Seine Bight
Community School on 28 July 2009.
Comments on the EIA are due on or before 28 July 2009 and should be directed
to the Department of the Environment at 10/12 Ambergris Avenue, Belmopan,
Belize by fax, email or mail. (Fax number is 822-2862 and email addresses
are
[email protected] and
[email protected] - send to both email
addresses - the paper notice lists the btl address as DOE's email address,
but we have been told that the btl address no longer works.)
If comments are emailed of faxed to DOE, a copy of the comments should also
be mailed by registered mail so that DOE cannot claim the comments were not
received. If you do send comments to DOE and also email them to PCSD, we
will take care of mailing them for you by registered mail.
PS: According to Section 4.1 of Flora and Fauna Section, 1st page, we have
8,500 people living on the Placencia Peninsula, with approximately 2,000
living in Placencia Village. Also, according to the EIA we had 40,000
tourists in 2005. In addition, water will come from BWSL????????
Apparently, Placencia Village will not be affected by the marina since it is
not mentioned as an affected community.
