From the US Embassy: "Dengue is an infectious disease that is transmitted by the bite of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which breed in fresh water stored in natural or artificial containers in and around human dwellings, such as old tires, flowerpots, and water storage containers."
A town councilor has a number of old golf cart tires in his yard to protect his plants from the 6 dogs he keeps. He needs counciling!

Aedes mosquitoes can be easily distinguished as it is larger in size and have black and white stripes on its body, so it is sometimes called tiger mosquitoes. They usually bite during the day time.

To prevent the infection of dengue virus, social awareness and control of mosquitoes is the foremost. The environment should be clean, water tanks and containers should be covered and mosquito nets should be used. If there is any fever, immediately consult qualified homoeopathic doctors or allopathic doctors, if required get hospitalized either in a clinic or hospital for proper observation and treatment.

Prevention of Dengue Fever with Homeopathy

Simple Dengue Fever (DF)

The trends of current symptomatology of the epidemic reveals that Eupatorium perfoliatum 200 can be taken twice daily for three days and subsequently at least two doses a week at the interval of three - four day till the epidemic persist for the prevention of dengue fever.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF)

Ipecac in 200 potency can be given twice a day for three days and two doses a week in all the patients those who have already suffered with the dengue fever and are prone for dengue haemorrhagic fever. This drug can also be used alternately with Eupatorium perfoliatum 200 to prevent both the types of dengue fever in so far not infected individuals.

These medicines are safe and can be given to any age group and even to the pregnant women without any side effects, but it is always better if these are used in consultation with the nearest qualified homoeopathic doctor (Dr Tina's clinic).

The Ministry of Health is stepping up its education program regarding Vector control.

If tires are going to remain in the yard then I suggest that you have holes drilled into them so that they cannot hold standing water.

The Ministry of Health and the Public Health inspectors have a vector control specialist that provides the town council with a spraying schedule that is determined by a number of factors. The town council follows the schedule which is typically 3 days on and 5 days off.

The spraying schedule is done in a certain order for a reason - although we all don't see that order when we are being munched!

The one big factor to be addressed if we wish to reduce the number of mosquitoes on the island is to remove their breeding grounds which are containers, puddles, ditches etcs that contain standing fresh water.

The health inspector is treating wells, fresh water cisterns etc so that mosquito larvae cannot survive in these sources of fresh water but it is up to the general public to clean up the garbage, trash, litter and to observe other items such as buckets, wheelbarrows, empty bottles etc and place them in a manner that will not allow fresh water to collect and pool.

Dog water bowls, bird baths etc should be washed and scrubbed with soap at least once per week.

I have a pile of tips written down and will post when I get a chance.

The last spraying seems to have made a difference. The previous two just served to increase the number of mosquitoes sheltering inside my house!

I have a vacant lot next to my house that often has standing water. Should I perhaps tip a bottle of bleach into it occasionally?

Not bleach.

Use ordinary, everyday cooking oil.

I am not sure of doseage and will try to find out from the health inspector.

When the mosquito spray truck comes by you are advised not to close your windows and doors, let the spray waft through to reach the mosquitoes. Ministry of Health also advises us to spray (shelltox or fish spray) our homes indoors. The mosquitoes like to hide under beds, in closets etc.
